Alters have been organized into groups by similar function/role.

Naming scheme is taken from the zones of the open ocean ("pelagic") and "benthic", meaning on the seafloor.
Alters that are placed in benthic do not share a similar role to each other nor to any of the other groups.
This is mostly just for ease of communication, and is not (to our current understanding) representative of subsystems.
